Making CBD Oil At Home — Practical, or a Hassle?

The legalization of hemp CBD oil in the United States has brought relief to many chronic pain sufferers. This growing industry releases new products all the time that you can buy online. But how do you know if a product is good or not?

One way to tell is the price. Lower-end oils will cost about $0.10/mg while higher end costs $0.16+/mg.

If those prices seem too steep or you want to make a cannabis-based CBD oil, you can always try to make it at home. Learn whether making CBD oil at home practical or just a hassle below.

How to Make CBD Oil at Home: Tools, Ingredients, and Process

There are two main ways to make CBD oil at home: the alcohol/ethanol method and the oil method. The other most common method of making CBD oil is the CO2 extraction method. But that requires specialized equipment and expertise.

Here we’ll go over the process of the “Oil Method.” (Be aware that this process will make your home kitchen smell fairly skunky the whole time.) The ingredients and tools you need include:

  • At least 1g of high-quality flowers/buds
  • A grinder or pair of scissors
  • A carrier oil like coconut, avocado, etc. (The higher the fat content, the better the extraction.)
  • A glass or ceramic bowl
  • A double boiler
  • Silicone spatula
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cheesecloth/sieve
  • An oven
  • A jellyroll pan or cookie sheet with sides

Oil Extraction Method for Making CBD Oil:

  1. Grind or cut the flowers and spread them out on a jellyroll pan or cookie sheet with sides. Bake them in the oven at 220F for 90-100 minutes to decarboxylate them and turn it into its active form.
  2. Place the decarboxylated flowers into the top of a double boiler or in a mason jar. Cover them in your chosen carrier oil, adding more or less depending on how potent you want the end result.
  3. If using a double boiler, bring the water below to a boil and let it go for around 3 hours. Check out it from time to time and add more water if needed.
  4. If using a mason jar, find a big pot and put the sealed jar on top of a towel in the pot. Fill it with water, so it doesn’t cover the lid and put a lid on the pot. Bring it up to a boil then let it simmer for the same amount of time, checking for water occasionally.
  5. After three hours, turn off the heat and let the flowers and oil sit together while covered.
  6. Wait three hours and repeat the process. Then leave the mixture overnight.
  7. The next day, strain flowers out of the oil using the cheesecloth. Squeeze out as much oil as you can and put it into a container with a tight-fitting lid.
