Understanding Different Types of House Paints

Thinking your house needs a bit of a refresh? Finding a new color or style can do so by bringing out the best qualities of your home.

But when it comes to paints, there’s a lot to consider.

In this article, we’ll cover the different types of house paints and primers so you can figure out what meets your home’s needs best.

Best Exteriors Paints

Exterior paints do double duty. They make your house look great while also keeping the home protected.

As such, great exterior paints need to be long-lasting and water-resistant more than anything else.

Oil-Based Paints

Oil-based paints (sometimes called solvent-based paints) are common amongst professionals. These paints offer hard finishes making them water-resistant and durable.

They also are considered stain blockers, meaning that this paint protects wood that could stain or metals that can rust.

Unlike other paints (especially interior paints) oil-based paints can take a while to dry, sometimes more than 24 hours. While you’re painting, make sure you stir the paint often as the oils in the paint separate quickly.

Latex-Based Paints

Latex paint comes with many of the perks of oil-based paint, with the addition that it’s easier to handle. Paint application doesn’t require special brushes and it dries far quicker.

Something to note is that there are different types of latex paint–some for indoors, others for outdoors. Make sure you pick outdoor latex paint if working on your exterior.

Finally, the highest quality latex paint is acrylic latex. This paint works great on everything, including metal and masonry. Note that these more stubborn surfaces will require a primer, but siding and other surfaces may not.

Best Interior Paints

Interior paints have different priorities. They usually don’t need to be as water-resistant and you don’t want them to be odorous.

As well, you have to decide if you want a space to look more spacious or cozy. Paint types and colors will affect the feel of a space.

Water-Based Paints

Having less of a stench is just the beginning, as water-based paints are easier to use and cleaner than their exterior counterparts.

You’ll likely find a slew of water-based paints wherever you purchase paint. Each brand is a bit different in terms of application process and durability.

It also makes getting different samples and trying them out fast and easy. Even though some colors sell for more, you need to do what makes your home feel perfect for you.
