We’re Going Green! Eco-Friendly Interior Design

It’s no secret that the world is facing a massive threat to its sustainability. Whether people want to accept it, however, is another story.

Fortunately, for those of us who accept the reality of our planet and choose to make an effort to reduce the problem, there are a lot of options. First and foremost, we must change the way we live our everyday lives. This includes incorporating an eco-friendly interior design in our homes.

Eco-Friendly Interior Design Tips

In America, we create over 230 million tons of trash every single day. Additionally, we’re cutting down forests at an all-time high and very quickly moving through our remaining natural resources. If nothing is done to slow the destruction of the earth, it will be a very different place in 100 years.

However, being more environmentally conscious about how you live your life can go a long way, even as one person. After all, a single candle flame in a dark room makes a heck of a lot of difference than no light at all. Take a look at these eco-friendly interior design tips you can implement to help light some candles.

1. A Less-is-More Mentality

First, we recommend taking a minimalist approach to your interior design, including your possessions. Did you know most people only wear about 50 percent of the clothes they own? Think about all the stuff you have lying around the house that you hardly even look at.

When approaching an eco-friendly interior design, come at it from the perspective of less is more.

2. Energy Star Appliances

Next, Energy Star appliances are certified to be more energy efficient. They are an endorsement that can be found on nearly all brands of any appliance or electronic.

We recommend using Energy Star washers, dryers, fridges, dishwashers, and ovens to save on water and electricity.

3. Solar Powered Electronics

While we’re talking about saving electricity, let’s talk solar. While solar panels are outside and don’t qualify as eco-friendly “interior design” elements, the electronics they power do.

Just like appliances, all of your electronics come with an Energy Star option. By installing a small solar system specifically to power your low-energy electronics will take a huge impact off the environment and a large amount out of your energy bill. Make sure you talk to a solar company to make sure you’re getting the right set up and proper installation.

4. Sustainable Flooring Options

Next, think about what type of flooring you’re going to use. While decadent and exotic hardwoods are a status symbol, it also serves as a symbol of waste and deforestation.

Instead, choose eco-friendly flooring options such as cork, bamboo, reclaimed wood, recycled glass, or wool carpet flooring.

5. Repurposed Furniture

Finally, in your eco-friendly interior design, plan on using environmentally conscious furniture. A trending furniture style right now is a repurposed or industrial look. Although, you can also go with a warm, repurposed wood feel.

Regardless, avoid buying synthetic materials or expensive and rare woods that aren’t harvested sustainably.

There’s So Much More You Can Do

Now that you’ve got your eco-friendly interior design laid out, you can rest easy knowing that you’re doing your part. However, there’s always more to be done.

You could cut back on how much meat you consume every week or even go vegetarian. You can also look into using fewer plastics in your day to day life or even opt for a less impactful mode of transportation. The options are endless.
