5 Living Room Decorating Tips You Can’t Ignore

When you move into a new place or feel like freshening things up, redecorating is one of the most important things you can do. A fresh look can totally transform a space and make it unique.

If you’re planning on redoing your living room or family room, you have endless design options. While this can be a good thing, it can also make living room decorating overwhelming. Where do you even begin?

We want to make your life a little easier. Keep reading for a quick guide on choosing family room and living room decor.

1. Pick a Theme

Whether we’re talking about living room designs or family room decorations, you need to settle on a theme. A design theme will pull the entire room together so all of your design elements will work cohesively.

While some homeowners choose a different theme for each room of the house, you might want to keep things in line with your current decor. Alternatively, maybe now is a good time to start a new design theme throughout the whole house, beginning with your living room decorating.

2. Mix It Up With Textures

Regardless of what theme you choose, add some depth to your living room decor with a variety of different textures. Of course, all of these textures should fall within the parameters of your color scheme.

However, you can really add depth and intrigue to space by using things like:

  • Metal
  • Wood
  • Cloth
  • And more

For example, metal lamps sitting on wood furniture pair nicely together. You should also invest in thick wool throws for the backs of chairs and couches.

3. Be Bold With Colors

Next, experiment with different pops of colors with your living room decorating. However, you must be careful not to overwhelm people with too much intense coloring.

Design the majority of your home decor as neutral colors. Then, add color pops with a home accent door, couch cushions, wall art, etc. For example, check out these blue and white lamp shades.

4. Minimize Clutter

Did you know that clutter can increase stress and anxiety? Not only that, but a space with too much stuff can make the room feel cramped, small, and suffocating.

One of the most important interior design tips is knowing when to back off. Don’t over-decorate or try to pack too much stuff into a single space. As a result, your living room and family room will feel more open and inviting.

5. Warm Up Bare Floors With Rugs

Finally, complete your living room decorating with a large area rug. This probably isn’t necessary if your living room is already carpeted.

However, floor rugs can add warmth and depth to rooms with bare floors. Although wood flooring and laminate flooring is beautiful, it can also be cold (literally and figuratively).

Find a rug that meshes well with your design them. Additionally, this isn’t a bad place to add some color pops.
