Buyer’s Guide: Is Buying an Expensive Vacuum Cleaner Worth the Money?

Three months. That’s how long your new vacuum lasts before you have to retire it. You’re thinking that you should have shelled out the extra 100 dollars for the nice model instead of going with the cheaper one.

The problem is that the expensive one came with a lot of attachments that you didn’t think you would need in your small one-bedroom apartment.

How much should you spend on a vacuum to get high quality? Do you need all the bells and whistles? We’re here to answer your burning questions.

Check out this buyer’s guide to find out how much you should spend on your next vacuum cleaner.

How to Choose a Vacuum

How much you spend on your vacuum cleaner all depends on what you need. Before you shell out a bunch of money on a machine you’ll never use, consider the following things.

Take Your Flooring into Account

If your house is all hardwood, you don’t need the biggest, badest machine on the market to keep dirt off your floors. You can pick up a cheaper vacuum mop combo that doesn’t have too many attachments.

This is a different story if your entire house is decked out in carpet, however. You might need an expensive machine to keep things tidy.

How Big is Your House?

If you live in a small, one-bedroom apartment, you can probably get by with a cheap, cordless vacuum. As long as the battery is good, you’ll be able to get your floors done in 10 minutes at most.

If you live in a three-bedroom carpeted house, you’re going to need to pick up a pricier model with a cord. It’s going to take a lot more time and power to get your floors clean then a cordless vacuum can give you.

You Do Get What You Pay For

The base price to spend on a vacuum is 150 dollars. It won’t have all the bells and whistles that a 1000-dollar expensive vacuum cleaner will have but it will be enough to get the job done. We understand that this might seem ridiculous considering that there are machines out there that go for 30 and 50 bucks.

The problem is that you do get what you pay for. The cheaper ones will save you money at the moment but you’ll have to buy a new vacuum a few months later when it breaks.

If you can afford the 1000-dollar model, there’s no reason not to grab it considering it probably has more attachments than the 150-dollar one and it might last longer.

Is Expensive Better?

We will say that expensive isn’t always better. The 1000-dollar models are nice but you might not need all the features and attachments that it comes with. Sometimes they’re about the same quality as the cheaper models too.

Quality

The reason why some vacuums are marked at 1000 dollars is because of their parts. These parts cost more to manufacture so you end up spending a little bit more on the final product.

Since the pricey model is made with a high-powered motor and sturdy parts that means its performance is going to be better, right? Most of the time this is the case but there are exceptions.

Just because the parts are the best around doesn’t mean the vacuum has a design that’s constructive to cleaning. It might be difficult to use or not work the way you want it to.

Features and Attachments

Besides parts, the other thing that drives the price of a vacuum up is its attachments and features. Some have little indicator lights that tell you when the bin is full. If you have pets you might enjoy having a vacuum that’s designed to suck up pet hair.

Some have attachments that allow you to get into those little hard to reach crevices where the floor meets the wall. There are vacuums that have laser dirt sensors or have a handheld and upright mode. Technology is a beautiful thing.

The problem is that you might spring for the 1,200-dollar vacuum and never use a single one of the fancy features and attachments it comes with. Most of these high-end vacuums don’t give you a way to store the brushes you’re not using either which makes them easy to lose. That can be devastating considering how much you spent on it.

Durability

The great thing about expensive parts is that they’re built to last. They’re much more durable than the parts you find in a 50-dollar machine.

We will say that even though the parts are durable, they do have the chance to break. Wear and tear and faulty equipment is a thing that you may run into.

Most of these expensive machines do come with a warranty but if a part breaks after the warranty is up, you’ll be left having to pay for repairs. Often times it’s cheaper to buy a new vacuum rather than replacing the part that broke.

Cleaning Versatility

A lot of expensive vacuums have features that make them useful for tackling a variety of floor types. For example, some machines can switch from being a hardwood floor model to being a carpet one with the press of a button or the click of an attachment.

Sometimes the cheaper models offer more versatility, however. It depends on what’s driving the expensive machine’s price tag up. An LED display isn’t going to help you much if you need to clean different types of flooring.
