4 Tips on How to Organize Your Clothes in Your Closet

An organized, clean closet is simply the best. It makes your morning routine quicker, gives you an excuse to expand your wardrobe, and makes you feel organized. But, if your closet is a mess, how do you clean it up? Check out this guide to learn how to organize your clothes in your closet.

1. Declutter

First things first, before you organize your closet, you need to declutter it.

Chances are, you have some clothing items that you forgot you even had, and it’s time to get rid of them.

When choosing what to keep and what to donate, think about the seasons. For example, if you have a tank top that you went the whole summer without wearing once, then it’s time to donate it. The same goes for jackets, boots, and everything else.

You can also try the closet hanger experiment that was popularized by Oprah. In this experiment, you’ll start by facing your clothes all the same way in the closet. Then, after you wear something, you’ll flip it in the other direction.

After 6 months, whatever hasn’t been flipped goes into the donation pile.

2. Add Extra Space

Adding extra space to a cramped closet can help it look more organized and make it easier to navigate.

If after decluttering, your clothes are still bunched in your closet, it’s time to invest in hanger organizers.

Basically, these are hangers that are attached and stacked one on top of the other so that you can hang multiple pieces of clothing on one hanger.

Another way to add extra space to your closet is to invest in shelf dividers. These dividers will sit above the hanging clothes, and they allow you to neatly fold your clothing items one on top of the other so everything isn’t a big mess.

3. Store Shoes on the Back of the Door

The average American woman owns 19 pairs of shoes, and, 15 percent own 30 or more. Whether you’re average or above average, you’re probably trying to figure out what to do with all the shoes in your closet.

The best thing to do is to invest in a shoe rack that you can hang on your door.

Not only does this save space, but it also makes your shoes more easily accessible.

4. Arrange Clothes in a Logical Order

When you hang your clothes in your closet, don’t just shove them in place in random order.

Instead, arrange them in a pattern that works for you. For example, many people like to color coordinate their closets so they can easily pick out outfits. You could also organize your clothes by item, in which all the pants go together, all the sweaters go together, etc.

Or, you can organize by occasion. For example, you’ll have your work clothes in one section of the closet and your going out clothes in another.
