Straightening Up: 5 Organization Tips for a Neater Garage

Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans say their garage is too messy to fit their car? If you feel the same way you’re not alone.

Are you looking to organize your garage but not sure where to begin? Read on to discover 5 garage organizing ideas.

Sort Items

Before organizing items, you’ll want to dedicate at least a day, preferably an entire weekend to cleaning and organizing your garage. When it’s time to organize, you’ll want to have a pile that you’re keeping, one that you’re donating, and items to be thrown out.

Schedule a yard sale as soon as possible to get rid of the items you’re not keeping.

1. Slat Walls

Did you know that you can use your garage walls as storage? You can install what’s called slat wall panels to the walls so then you can hang almost anything. This is a great way to keep items organized, and of course off the floor.

Another plus is slat wall panels are scratch, water, and moisture resistant. They’re also super easy to install for easy garage organization.

2. Stack Bins

Plastic storage bins are a great way to organize your equipment and sports items. They sometimes get pushed and stacked against the wall, and forgotten about which makes them difficult to access. You can build DYI storage towers to make it easier to get to your different bins.

You can even separate each item into categories and have different color bins depending on the category.

3. Separate Space

Does everyone in your family have different hobbies or sports? Have a designated space for each person which has a bench to sit down and change shoes, a hook to hang up their jacket, and a place to hang up of the different sports equipment or other items.

4. Open Shelves

Instead of having closed shelves, choose open shelves to easily grab and see items. When you have open shelves you’re more likely to stay neat as well since it’s open for all to see. You’ll want to store as many items vertically on the wall as possible, but shelves are an option as well.

5. Overhead Spaces

The ceiling in your garage is actually a great space to hang items. Items you won’t be using every day like seasonal sports gear and ladders are great for the ceiling. Always make sure there’s enough room between the ceiling and vehicles, so you don’t scrape your car.

Keeping It Clean

Now that your garage is clean and organized, it’s important to maintain the look of it. At least once a year, go through your items separating them for items you’ll get rid of, donate, and keep. Keep a broom or handheld vacuum near your workbench if you have one to keep it neat.

Make sure to hose down your floor continually. Keep cat litter to absorb grease spills and oil.
